Notes:  This paper presents a detailed examination of the context in which parents kill their children, particularly during parental separation and in relation to family violence. The author draws on Australian and international research and data, as well as case studies of paternal filicides (cases in which the father killed his child) from Victoria and other Australian states using media reports and trial records where available. The report covers gendered patterns in family homicide generally, gendered patterns in filicide (when a child is killed by their parent), father’s and mother’s motivations for killing their children in the context separation and the implications for addressing ‘retaliatory’ filicides.
