Title: Violence against women prevention programming : report of what is in use
Authors: National Violence Against Women Prevention Research Center
Keywords: Prevention
Categories: Prevention
Year: 2003
Publisher: National Violence Against Women Prevention Research Center, Charlestown
Notes:  General Overview: :This report presents the results of a survey of domestic violence and sexual assault agencies in the United States (US) regarding prevention programs. It finds that most of the prevention programs being used are developed in-house, do not have manuals and have not been evaluated.

Discussion: :Surveys were mailed to 2 583 domestic violence and sexual assault agencies throughout the US, asking them to describe their prevention programs regarding sexual assault and domestic violence (including teen dating violence and date rape). Only 20% of agencies responded, and of those, 52% ran prevention programs. Most of these were developed by the agencies themselves, rather than relying on curricula developed by others and few were systematically evaluated. Most programs targeted women rather than men or perpetrators.

Conclusion: :The authors conclude that work needs to be done to encourage agencies to implement standardised, structured prevention programs that are amenable to evaluation. Agency staff should be trained in the use of such prevention programs and funding made available for evaluation.
