This report describes a research project which examines the issue of difficulties in women’s friendship formation following domestic violence. The authors are workers from the Kyabra Community Association in Brisbane, Queensland and the research arose from their observations regarding a groupwork program, known as The Ladies’ Lounge, which used a narrative therapy framework to support women who have lived with violence.

The research involved interviews with participants in the groupwork program, using a small sample of five women. The report provides a brief literature review of research on women’s mental health, friendships and social supports in the context of domestic violence, a discussion of women-centred action research approaches and an account of themes which emerged from interviews, including building communities, hopes for children’s friendships, ‘I am me again’ and disclosure. The authors also account the new practice approaches which they developed following the research.
