This report presents the findings from April to December 2005 on the needs of women experiencing domestic violence when accessing the Family Court in Townsville, Queensland.Thirty-eight women who had participated in the qualitative study (interviews) gave permission for the information to be used in the report. This report and its companion, Dragonfly Whispers:, bring the voices of the women telling of their experiences.
Part 1 gives an overview of the current context of the Family Law reform values of responses to domestic violence and the methodology guiding this research. Part 2 provides the experiences of the participants and of local service providers and legal practitioners. Part 3 contains the summary of findings, recommendations and suggested models for service provision.
* perception of equity of outcomes where many of the women described in detail how fear contributed to agreements that they might have resisted otherwise, with most of the women accepting less than their legal entitlements with regard to property settlements against the advice of legal representatives;
* women from non-dominant cultural backgrounds, women with (dis)abilities and women from remote areas are particularly disadvantaged;
Recommendations on the development of a programme of support for women experiencing domestic violence when accessing the Family Court in Townsville, Queensland are made. Five models of support are outlined including their advantages and disadvantages.
