Notes:  This executive summary reports on the research undertaken for Weena Mooga Gu Gudba to explore solutions to family violence in the Ceduna Aboriginal community. A literature review provided information on conditions related to family violence such as the abuse of alcohol and other substances, situational factors such as family and financial problems, colonisation and transgenerational trauma.

The impacts of family violence on Aboriginal communities include an increase in the level, severity and acceptance of violence, a loss of spirit and culture, and a loss of self-esteem and identity. The premise of this study was that any action to respond to family violence must be community-owned and -driven, with the support of the groups and organisations in the community. It used interpretive, participatory action research.

Recommendations include: a holistic community way to respond to family violence, with the strengthening of families based on an approach to build on the way the community understands family violence as interconnected issues; a community development approach to build on the community strengths identified; funding from relevant government bodies be pooled to provide resources; evaluation be conducted with commencement of collection and analysis of quantitative data regarding violence in the Ceduna community; existing initiatives tackling alcohol, drugs and gambling be incorporated as part of a holistic way to respond to family violence; a safe house for women and children to enable them to remain in the community to reduce family displacement and weakening of family structures; linking men with the strengths of the community and using culturally-based counselling; putting resources into children and young people’s programmes such as the youth club and early intervention in the schools.
