Notes: | Reports the views of migrant and refugee women from each Australian State and Territory. It serves as a resource for developing future policy. Forums were held in May to July 2001. The 4 major goals included: 1. Women’s economic security; 2. Elimination of violence in the lives of women; 3. Women’s optimal status and position; 4. Health and well being. Employment is seen as the key to women feeling safe and secure in their community and increasing their chance of independence. Information on domestic violence, services to assist victims, and relevant legislation is required by both men and women when they come to Australia. Some meetings found pressures within ethnic communities, which contribute to domestic violence, such as cultural insensitivities and interpretation of a woman’s role in the family and community. There is a shift away from programmes focusing just on women to those involving the whole family. The issue of GPs is important given the social isolation of many migrant and refugee women. Education programmes for GPs on abuse and culturally appropriate responses in referring women to services are recommended. It recommends for the provision of dedicated migrant women’s health workers to foster trust. Mental health for victims of torture and trauma was a common issue raised. Other strategies are also recommended. |
