Title: National audit of training available in Australia for working with men who use violence
Authors: Gevers, Leslie
Goddard-Jones, Marise
Keywords: Perpetrators;Standards;Training
Year: 2004
Publisher: Partnerships Against Domestic Violence
Notes:  Reports on the training currently available in Australia for working with men who use violence. A total of 82 programme providers was identified and contacted, 69 (84%) completed the questionnaire. Forums and interviews were held. Programme providers expressed the need for service development strategies and resources rather than formal training to help them in their work. Some of the key findings are: provision of information and domestic violence awareness training that focuses on men who use violence for those who do not work therapeutically, such as: correctional services officers, police, community workers and the judiciary; and development strategies to be focused on information sharing and resource development. Strategies on information sharing include: a national conference; facilitated workshops; improved and ongoing access to the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse; and a national database of programme providers. Strategies on resource development include: a resource package to provide practice examples and tools for improving practice; example of therapeutic approaches for working with men who use violence. Other issues include: replacing the language ‘perpetrator’ with ‘men who use violence’; reviewing the Partnerships Against Domestic Violence (PADV) to coincide with developing the National Practice Standards for working with men who use violence.
