Notes:  This pilot project (Domestic Violence Referral Project – DVRP) was conducted by the 6 Local Area Commands of the NSW Police Northern Region in 2001-2002, and aimed to facilitate the referral of victims of domestic violence by the police to local community agencies. It suggests that the project may have provided early intervention to women in domestic violence through the provision of information about legal processes. The referral rate to community agencies was low – between 6% and 27%. It was difficult to assess the impact the referral system had on victims of domestic violence. The project’s implementation relied on the commitment of attending police officers and community agencies. It argues that proactive referral systems could benefit victims of domestic violence and such benefits are enhanced when the project is developed in partnership, and with appropriate resourcing.
