Notes:  Aimed at promoting and improving the consistency of methods of intimate partner violence surveillance and research amongst interested individuals and organisations, this report presents a series of uniform definitions of violence against women and associated terms, such as ‘intimate partner’ and ‘perpetrator’. The introduction provides an overview of some of the difficulties that have arisen in the context of research into violence against women and the need for development of inter-organisational definitions and responses is highlighted. Key data elements identified as important in intimate partner violence surveillance are then outlined under the headings of: victim demographics; victims’ experiences of physical, sexual, psychological/emotional and threatened violence; and the temporality and other details of violent episodes. A table summarising the recommended data elements is provided in the appendix.
