Notes:	Provides a background to VicHealth, its role and goals before presenting an overview of statistics and research relating to violence against women globally and its relationship to women’s mental and physical health. The findings of the World Health Organization Report on Violence and Health are discussed and a range of definitional and conceptual issues that arise in the context of research into violence against women is considered. Some of the difficulties associated with collecting accurate and reliable data on the incidence and nature of violence against women are highlighted and it is recognised that violence against women occurs in a range of settings comprising a range of contextual factors. The need for violence against women to be acknowledged as a public health issue with economic as well as social consequences is argued and a series of recommendations for further research, prevention and resource development are made. The Australian Partnerships Against Domestic Violence Strategy, the Victorian Women’s Safety Strategy and the Victorian Health Promotion Foundations approach to violence against are examined and it is concluded that a preventative public health focus creates the potential for individual, community and social benefits.
