Notes: | Reports the findings of an evaluation of the operation of the Restraining Orders Act 1997 (WA), a relatively recent legislative initiative aimed at improving the response of the criminal justice and family court systems to a range of difficulties associated with the issuing and enforcement of restraining orders. Conducted over the first six months of the Act’s operation, the evaluation focuses primarily on data obtained through Magistrates courts and the Police Service and assesses the comparative effectiveness of the new legislation, in relation to past approaches. The findings suggest the new Act has considerably improved the effectiveness, availability and awareness of restraining orders but that several challenges remain. Concludes by recommending a range of reforms and services be implemented. |
