Conducted in conjunction with the Commonwealth Government’s ‘National Initiative to Combat Sexual Assault’, this paper provides a review of literature pertaining to the under-reporting and hidden recording of sexual assault in Australia, England, Wales, Canada, New Zealand and the United States from 1992 to 2000. Key issues emerging from the review include the utility of engaging a variety of data collection procedures and sources, the correlation of sexual assault with gender, age and victim-offender relationship, personal and structural factors contributing to under-reporting and the need for further research into the ways in which record-keeping systems can hide the incidence and prevalence of sexual crimes. Specific emphasis is placed on the experiences of Indigenous women, women from non-English speaking backgrounds, women in rural areas and women prisoners, and some of the implications of the review’s findings are identified.
