Notes:  Reports the findings of a study conducted to assess the use, implementation, management and effectiveness of the Restraining Orders Act 1997 (WA). A background to the introduction of restraining orders and the role they play in community protection is provided and key legislation involved in their enforcement is outlined. Specific problems in the administration of restraining orders, management of orders by police and the provision of support services such as counselling and legal aid are highlighted. Major findings of the research project include an increase in overall use of restraining orders, a tendency for restraining orders to be used in place of criminal prosecution and a need for greater consistency in police and inter-agency response.
