Notes: | Provides a background to the World Health Organization’s past and present work on violence against women generally before focusing on the recently conducted Multi-Country Study on Women’s Health and Domestic Violence. The study aimed to establish reliable data on violence against women across several countries and document the health consequences, risk and protective factors associated with domestic violence globally. The methodology of the study is outlined and a summary of its year-to-year progress is provided. Utilising case studies from Peru, Brazil and Thailand, the impact of the study at country level is discussed. Ethical and practical guidelines developed to enhance the research methodologies employed are suggested and a brief review of other initiatives being pursued by the WHO is presented. A summary of the project’s contributors, participants and budget is also included. |
