Aims to engage the interest of professionals working with older people by framing the problem of violence against older women in such a way as to lead to social change. The authors found that the project, which involved groups of older women coming together to share their experiences of violence, engendered a lesser sense of individual isolation and a greater sense of empowerment to tackle the problem. The hidden nature of violence against older women and the role of professionals in diverting social policy away from being of real assistance, owing to stereotypical visions of older women being helpless victims, are explored to some depth. Issues such as the lasting effects of violence; surviving the violence; seeking help; changing the situation; and independence and empowerment are discussed at some length. The notion of elder abuse was found to be confining and misleading as a theoretical framework to analyse these women’s experiences, and has resulted in inappropriate policy responses that have been unhelpful to older women and professionals alike. A booklet titled ‘Older women speak up: Violence in the home’ was one outcome of the project.
