Notes: | Reports on the outcomes of a collaborative research project between the Department of Social Work, Social Policy and Sociology, University of Sydney and Barnardos Australia. The research was conducted in NSW over a four-year period from 1997-2001. It aimed: to examine practitioners’ knowledge and understandings of domestic violence and child protection; to review child protection strategies utilised by practitioners; and to identify effective strategies which could be used in responding to both women and their children. The research included four independent but related studies: an analysis of the NSW Department of Community Services' (the statutory child protection statutory authority in NSW) responses to domestic violence, through a case tracking study; the understandings of practitioners (in both statutory and non-statutory organisations) of the policy and practice issues related to the protection of children and young people who live with domestic violence; women’s perceptions about living with domestic violence and the protection of their children; and the views of children and young people who had lived with domestic violence about the violence in their lives. The main outcome of the research was the development of a template of "good practice" for practitioners and policy makers addressing the rights, needs and interests of women and their children who have lived with domestic violence. |
