Catalogue number: OFW 165 A comprehensive evaluation report of Phase II of the implementation of the ACT Family Violence Intervention Program, a coordinated interagency response by the criminal justice and community sectors to violence within intimate and family relationships. Key strategies implemented as part of the second phase of this initiative include: the establishment of new procedures for dealing with family violence cases in the ACT magistrates Court; the appointment of a specialist Family Violence Prosecutor and a Witness Assistant within the office of the DPP; and the trialing of a number of initiatives in one of the ACT’s four police patrols (Woden). These initiatives included the appointment of a Family Violence Project Officer, conducting a 2-day training workshop for all Woden police officers, and the introduction of new, digital equipment to assist in the investigation of family violence incidents, the monitoring of all family violence incidents, and the documenting of police best practice guidelines. Provides the results of the evaluation strategy which included: comparison of the 1999-2000 criminal justice data on family violence matters with the 1998-99 benchmarks; a survey of 50 police officers in Woden patrol; a survey of 75 police officers from other patrols; focus group discussions with 30 Woden police officers; a survey of 39 victims of family violence whose cases were prosecuted; and in-depth interviews with 30 key stakeholders. The victim survey sought information on policing and prosecution, overall satisfaction with the criminal justice system and victims’ feelings of safety.
