Reports on evaluation of "Keep Safe and Stay Cool", a programme targeted to whole youth communities, based on a social learning approach. Recommends continuation of the project and longitudinal evaluation to be established. Describes developmental stages of the project and growing involvement of peer educators. Peer educators were assessed throughout the programme by pre- and post-test questionnaires, group debriefs at the end of training sessions and feedback from journals kept by peer educators throughout the training period. Peer educators were interviewed about the changes in their lives as a consequence of their involvement in Keep Safe & Stay Cool. This highlighted positive changes in attitudes about violence and relationships, increased self-esteem and self-confidence, and reflection on equality within their own intimate relationships. Questionnaires distributed to participants indicated an increase in awareness, knowledge and new consideration of relationships issues. Effective components of the programme included the ability to conduct sequential sessions with the same group and peer educators’ ability to communicate as equals with young people. The opportunity to provide role modelling for students was emphasised in evaluation sheets by students and teachers. A more pro-active approach will be undertaken to recruiting peer educators from culturally diverse backgrounds.
