Outlines the context, aims, management, budget, strategy, findings and recommendations of the state-wide Non-English Speaking Women and Violence Project. The report addresses some of the key issues facing victims of domestic violence from a community development perspective, identifying various ways in which health and welfare agencies might become more responsive to women from non-English speaking backgrounds through the development of more culturally appropriate and co-ordinated services.

Section one examines some of the major factors placing NESB women in vulnerable and socio-economically disadvantaged positions and outlines some of the most recent research undertaken in the area of violence against women from NESB communities. Problems of under-reporting and inaccessibility of services are highlighted. An overview of the project, its aims, management and budget is then provided and specific strategies implemented, including support groups, training programmes and action research, outlined.

The findings of the project, collated through a variety of methods, are presented under four headings; the role of project management, the outcomes of training, data collected from participating support groups and the response of agencies funded under the project. The conclusions and recommendations of the report emphasise flexibility in service delivery, role delineation amongst service providers, the importance of community education and cross-cultural training and the improvement of access to services.

Section two provides a summary of the evaluation reports submitted by participating agencies throughout the project and the Appendix includes a budget detail, workshop evaluations and a summary of the progress of each of the support groups involved.
