Outlines the background, principles, methodology and strategies for implementation of the Aboriginal Family Violence Strategy, an initiative of the Northern Territory Government developed in consultation with Indigenous women in the Northern Territory and the Office of Women’s Policy. The preface provides a rationale for the use of the term family as opposed to domestic violence in the context of Aboriginal communities. Part one examines the impetus for the project and some of the major issues raised by available quantitative and qualitative research. Policy initiatives already being implemented are listed and the methodology for the current project outlined. Part two focuses on the principles supporting a community based approach to Aboriginal family violence and four frameworks devised to assist organisations in developing appropriate responses are provided. These frameworks are accompanied by a summary of proposed goals and strategies aimed at reducing and/or preventing violence in Indigenous communities. Part three highlights the importance of coordinating efforts within the project and presents a plan of action consisting of a series of recommendations, strategies for implementation, action measures and desired outcomes. The Appendix provides a model of traditional dispute resolution and domestic violence profiles of the communities involved in the study.
