Notes: | While the connections between child abuse and domestic violence have been identified, details of appropriate practice interventions have been slower to develop. This English research project aimed to overview current practice and to highlight areas requiring attention in order to progress work with the interface of child protection and domestic violence. The methodology involved documentary analysis of case files and semi-structured interviews with workers regarding 93 children who were the subject of a child protection conference. The sample was drawn to include all Asian families from the caseload of two teams in order to explore the particular issues facing Asian families. Findings were that intervention either avoided or minimised the issue of domestic violence (the dominant pattern) or took a confrontational approach involving the most serious intervention strategy of removing children. Concludes by suggesting two principles which should guide policy and intervention: that interventions should direct responsibility towards the man and his abuse; and that protecting mothers experiencing domestic violence is also good child protection. |
