Notes: | The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Taskforce on Violence was established in 1998. Its objectives were to identify the factors behind the escalation of violence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities in Queensland, and to provide advice on community-based strategies for prevention and intervention. The result is a comprehensive report reflecting the Commission’s efforts to gain a greater understanding of violence: its various forms and expressions; its nature and extent; causes and consequences. Emphasis was placed on listening to ideas for community development processes for transformation and change. Qualitative methodology was chosen to allow for the inclusion of peoples’ stories about their own experiences of violence and the transgenerational effect of historical trauma. The emphasis was on allowing people to tell their stories, with as little interpretation as possible. Concludes with comprehensive recommendations covering service delivery; economic sustainability; alcohol and other drugs; education as empowerment; health improvement; housing; families and security; justice; and healing and Indigenous cultural promotion. |
