Berry Street's 'Shaping a New Future Program' (SNF) was one of seven organisations funded under the Partnerships Against Domestic Violence initiative through the Victorian Department of Human Services to document good practice in the 'Supporting Children and Young People affected by Family Violence Project'. The SNF programme, aimed at addressing the therapeutic or support needs of children and the 'parenting after violence' issues for women, offers 3 groups run concurrently over a nine-week period: group for women survivors who have already addressed their personal issues of living with a violent partner and wish to focus on parenting concerns; a primary school-aged children's group; and a pre-school (3-5 years) children's group. The agency is committed to a 'whole' family' approach, which acknowledges women and children survivors as a family unit. Addresses the societal myth that 'good mothers cope, regardless of the availability of supports'. Demonstrates a collaborative approach involving co-operation between workers and organisations with different cultures, experience and training; use of a story-telling approach to engage participants, break secrecy and illuminate common themes in a way which also lets people hold on to their own stories; and inclusion of siblings. Two pilot programmes run in 1995/96 with the Children's Protection Society have evaluated and the evaluation is available.
