Merri Housing Children's Support Program was one of seven organisations funded under the Partnerships Against Domestic Violence initiative through the Victorian Department of Human Services to document good practice in the 'Supporting Children and Young People affected by Family Violence Project'. Merri Housing Service is a community-managed and -supported accommodation service which provides supported accommodation on a medium- to long-term basis in a community development framework and family outreach in the North-East region of Victoria. As part of the growing awareness of the needs of children within SAAP services, the service established a children's support pilot project. A half-time worker is employed to work solely with pre-school and primary-aged children. Case management is used and each child has an individual support plan and the support is delivered form the service users perspective. Provides a safe, non-judgemental space for the children to express themselves and assists parents to recognise and support their children emotionally.
