Notes:  This paper reports on the findings from a national survey conducted in the US of legal and social service providers, advocates, community and religious leaders, educators, and law enforcement officers about forced marriage. The survey focused on forced marriage in immigrant communities. Of the 500 surveyed agencies, 41% reporting encountering at least one forced marriage case, accounting for as many as 3000 cases in the last two years in the US. Most of the victims were girls under the age of 18 from 56 countries and many different religions and faiths. Other findings indicate frontline services are not adequately equipped to recognise and respond to cases of forced marriage, including no agency definition of forced marriage, no screening process and inadequate skills and resources to respond. The research also examined systemic polices and the lack of legal protections for women in forced marriages along with common risk factors and types of abuse. Recommendations focus on further research and establishing a national network to raise awareness, offer training and develop policy.
