Overview: This UK report presents the results of evaluation of two court-based Domestic Violence Pilots, which trialled a different way of improving responses to domestic violence.
Discussion: The Caerphilly pilot provided an advocate for domestic violence victims, located with police, a co-ordinator (lawyer), an administrator (who was a dedicated case worker) and Domestic Violence Forum Coordinator. Supervision for the advocate was provided by the Cardiff Women’s Safety Unit. This site made use of an existing court and pre-trial reviews were given a special slot one morning per week. The Croydon site established a Specialist Domestic Violence Court, including a dedicated sitting for pre-trial matters and sentencing allocated weekly, specialist magistrates trained in domestic violence issues, specially trained lawyers, a police liaison officer and support from Croydon Domestic Violence Advisory Service.
The report examines in detail the outcomes and criteria for success from each site, presenting results and quantifying improvements. Recommendations for good practice and improvements and changes in policy and practice are made throughout. The costs associated with each aspect of the trials are detailed and analysed.
