Discussion: :This report, resourced by Amnesty International UK and the Women’s National Commission, suggests that the current ‘silo’ approach to addressing different forms of violence against women in the UK is inadequate and should be replaced by a comprehensive, strategic approach, which focuses on long-term action and prevention. The report begins by canvassing the various forms and prevalence of violence against women in the UK, including domestic violence, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, sexual assault, exploitation and trafficking, and mapping the connections between them. It then discusses the serious impacts that such violence has on the lives of women and girls and locates violence against women as a human rights issue. The current responses to violence against women employed by the government and NGO sector in the UK are briefly outlined and gaps in service provision and ‘missed opportunities’ are identified. The report concludes with two sections that highlight the benefits of implementing an integrated approach to addressing violence against women and strategies for establishing such an approach at the national level. The report suggests that any national action plan that is developed should include: a commitment to a long term, prevention approach; clear goals; coordinated measures that address various forms of violence against women; and evaluation measures to monitor the impact of responses and the long-term prevalence of violence and abuse.
