General Overview: This Scottish report outlines the background, methodology and outcomes of a project that provided an opportunity for six young people with experience of domestic abuse to present their priorities for action on domestic abuse directly to Scottish Government Ministers.

Discussion: The project, which was commissioned by the Scottish Government’s National Domestic Abuse Delivery Group, facilitated a meeting between six young people, aged 15 to 20 years, with experience of domestic abuse and three Scottish Government Ministers. The aim of the project was to enable young people to present their own priorities regarding the action required to address the impact of domestic abuse on children and young people directly to government ministers involved in developing the National Domestic Abuse Delivery Plan. The young people selected to participate in the project had all been involved in previous research conducted by the report’s author and Scottish Women’s Aid.

Two preparation sessions were arranged during which the young people worked together to develop a set of three to five priorities to be delivered to the Ministers, practiced their delivery techniques and discussed concerns relating to the meeting. The report provides a thematic overview of the priorities developed by the young people, making extensive use of direct quotes from the preparation sessions. Priorities included: support workers, outreach support to children, making moving house and refuge life better, and making more help available at school. The final section of the report discusses the importance of young people’s participation in government planning and includes feedback on the preparation process and the meeting itself provided by both the young people and ministers involved. A full transcript of the meeting held on September 18, 2007, is attached at Annex 1.
