Provides an outline of the Queensland Government’s progress in responding to the 123 recommendations set out in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Task Force on Violence Report, published in 1999. A background to the ‘Next Step’ and its primary focus areas are set out in the introduction as are the key initiatives implemented or to be implemented in 2000 and beyond. A series of government and community based initiatives set up in various locations across Queensland are presented as good practice models for reducing violence. The government’s strategy for reducing Indigenous family violence is then set out under three headings – addressing violence in communities through priority areas; strengthening community well being; and building partnerships. Case studies of what specific programmes have done and will do in the future are linked to the recommendations of the report. A detailed update of progress in relation to each of the recommendations is provided in tabular format at the end of the report.
