"The information in the booklet is taken from the NSW government action plan for women 2000-2002"
Outlines some of the key initiatives being implemented by the New South Wales Government in recognition of the primary needs and priorities identified by women from non-English speaking backgrounds. The introduction provides a background to the report, including information relating to the origin of NESB people in NSW, the legal distinction between migrants and refugees, and government policies with regard to the arrival of NESB people. The gendered nature of the disadvantage experienced by NESB people is highlighted and several recommendations for reform in the areas of planning, research, staffing, communication and funding are made. Brief descriptions of various programmes currently being developed and/or implemented in NSW are then provided under six main headings: family and community; work; education and training; health; violence; and access to justice and equality before the law. Under each of these headings, the importance of family and community networks, financial and emotional security, safety, improved access to services and freedom from discrimination is emphasised. The Appendix provides a list of health services available to NESB women, a table of government programmes targeted at NESB women and a summary of the ‘Principles of Multiculturalism’, as outlined in the Community Relations Commission and Principles of Multiculturalism Bill 2000 (NSW).
