Methods: The research primarily focused on mistreatment occurring within a relationship where an ‘expectation of trust’ could be expected to exist. Face to face interviews were carried out with individuals aged sixty-six and over, living in private households (including sheltered accommodation. Respondents were surveyed in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in 2006. They were followed up at a later date. In total 2111 individuals were interviewed.

Findings: The survey found that 2.6% of people aged 66 and over (approx. 227,000 people), living in private households, reported suffering mistreatment in the past year. Women were more likely to suffer mistreatment than men and the types of mistreatment in order of prevalence were:
