Notes: | A Love that Kills:is a documentary drama from Canada about Monica Speers, a young woman who was fatally stabbed by her boyfriend. Stages of the relationship are re-enacted to demonstrate the progression of abuse from tactics of isolation, financial abuse, threats of violence escalating to homicide. Throughout the video Monica’s mother Dawna is interviewed about what happened to her daughter leading up to her tragic death. The video includes footage of Dawna Speers as she embarks on a nationwide tour to create awareness amongst young people in high schools about signs of an abusive relationship and what they can do about it. Friends of Monica are also interviewed about their observations and concern for Monica. The video sleeve includes suggested guidelines for educators about using the video which is highly emotive. Clear steps of preparation to be undertaken by the educator prior to showing the video are summarised . Information about domestic violence including warning signs of abuse, statistics and useful contacts are also included. Suggested activities to conduct with young people after viewing the video are outlined. |
