Abstract:  This report card provides key data updates on progress towards the primary prevention of violence against women in Australia. It highlights significant improvements in Australians' attitudes and understandings of violence against women and gender inequality since 2013, while also addressing the ongoing challenges. The report emphasizes the importance of tracking changes in awareness, attitudes, behaviours, and structural reforms to build the foundations of a more equal society. The report card updates the findings of the previous national monitoring report (2009-2019) with new data from 2020 to 2023, and underscores the continued need for comprehensive action to prevent violence against women and their children.

There have been slow but significant improvements across many of the key measures of progress in the prevention of violence against women.

  • Australians’ attitudes and understandings of violence against women and gender inequality have improved significantly since 2013.
  • While violence against women remains a national emergency, the prevalence of physical and intimate partner violence has decreased over the past decade.
  • There is still significant work to do across Australia to end violence against women and their children.
