Abstract:  This report outlines the best practice principles for engaging individuals with lived and living experience of domestic, family, and sexual violence (DFSV) in Australia. Developed through consultations with over 123 individuals, including survivors and professionals within the women's safety sector, the framework emphasises the importance of inclusive, accessible, and culturally safe engagement practices. The report highlights the need for a multi-layered approach to engagement, which includes providing diverse and safe avenues for participation, ensuring anonymity when requested, and building trusting relationships over time. The principles aim to extend the diversity of voices that inform service delivery and policy-making, with a particular focus on supporting those who may face barriers to engagement.

  • The report emphasises the importance of using inclusive language, providing multiple channels for engagement, and ensuring cultural safety.
  • Engagement strategies must be trauma-informed, with support provided before, during, and after participation.
  • Intersectional representation on advisory bodies and tailored engagements are crucial for effective policy and service development.
  • There is a critical need for building long-term, trusting relationships with communities to support ongoing engagement and input.
