Education groups for men who batter: The Duluth Model

Abstract

This book outlines the theoretical framework and structured curriculum of the Duluth Model, a widely recognised approach to working with men who use violence against their partners. Developed as part of the Duluth Domestic Abuse Intervention Project (DAIP), the model is rooted in a coordinated community response that prioritises victim safety and offender accountability. The book details the process of engaging men in court-mandated education groups, guiding them through a structured curriculum designed to challenge their belief systems, reduce their need for control, and develop alternative, non-violent behaviours. The curriculum is organised around eight core themes: negotiation and fairness, non-threatening behaviour, respect, trust and support, honesty and accountability, responsible parenting, shared responsibility, and economic partnership. Each session incorporates role-plays, group exercises, and structured self-reflection to promote meaningful change. The book also discusses the role of facilitators, methods for evaluating intervention programs, and the broader systemic responsibilities of justice and human service institutions in addressing intimate partner violence.
