Abstract: | This report presents findings from the Project Mirabal study, which evaluates the effectiveness of domestic violence perpetrator programs (DVPPs) in the UK. The study examines the role of DVPPs in changing the behaviour of men who use domestic violence and their impact on the safety and well-being of women and children. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research identifies key measures of success, including improved respectful communication, expanded ‘space for action’ for survivors, reductions in violence and abuse, enhanced parenting practices, and a shift towards accountability. The report highlights challenges in evaluating perpetrator programs, including methodological difficulties in determining long-term impact, and discusses how DVPPs contribute to a coordinated community response (CCR) to domestic violence. Findings indicate that while significant reductions in physical and sexual violence occur, coercive control and other abusive behaviours may persist to varying degrees. The report provides evidence supporting the integration of DVPPs within broader systemic responses to domestic and family violence and makes recommendations for future policy and practice. |
