The effectiveness of interventions for perpetrators of domestic and family violence: An overview of findings from reviews

Abstract

This report provides a systematic review of research evaluating the effectiveness of interventions for perpetrators of domestic and family violence (DFV). It synthesises evidence from 41 review studies assessing behaviour change programs and legal and policing interventions to determine their impact on reducing recidivism and improving outcomes for victims and survivors.<br><br>

Findings indicate that behaviour change programs, including cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), motivational interventions, and substance-use treatment, show mixed effectiveness, with some studies reporting reductions in DFV while others highlight methodological weaknesses. Legal and policing interventions, such as protection orders and arrest policies, also demonstrate varied impact, with protective orders showing some effectiveness in reducing severe harm but limited impact on minor or non-physical abuse.<br><br>

The report underscores the importance of intervention completion, with higher dropout rates linked to increased recidivism. It highlights key gaps in evidence, including the need for comparative studies assessing intervention outcomes over time. Recommendations include a greater focus on tailoring interventions to specific perpetrator needs, integrating holistic supports, and improving research methodologies to assess long-term program impact.
